Spoken Words workshops are designed to equip your child with everything they need for group and 1 to 1 interview
Why your voice matters!
Most parents are aware of the benefits of reading with their children, understanding that exposure to words, stories and ideas does children a huge favour in all sorts of ways. We know that an understanding and command of language is everything! It enables children to express themselves succinctly, respond and question the world around them and develop their ideas both alone and with others.
But far fewer parents pay attention to the “spoken word” itself. That is, to how their children use language “aloud” and of the part the voice plays in the social, emotional and intellectual development of the child. Perhaps we just assume that the “voice” takes care of itself and that children instinctively know how to be clear and audible but the truth is that far too many children are vocally unsure of themselves particularly when they step into a public space.
Grown-ups and children alike can struggle to articulate thoughts aloud. For many adults, making a speech in front of a room of others, or speaking up in a meeting is challenging. Even high-achieving, thoughtful, intelligent adults can struggle to be audible and interesting in a public space. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to give children the opportunity to start young!
Spoken Words work with children in playful and effective ways helping them understand that their voice is important and unique to them. It’s nothing to do with the old-fashioned idea of elocution where everyone was required to conform to the standard of received pronunciation (How Now Brown Cow, anyone?) and everything to do with giving children the ways and means to find and regulate articulation, vocal strength and clarity.
The workshops are run by professional voice coach Laura Field (who has prepared hundreds of children for LAMDA exams and coaches business professionals) and ex-prep Head Vania Georgeson who, with a Drama background, is passionate about allowing children the time and space to enjoy Shakespeare, Poetry and Speechmaking as part of their everyday education. The workshops are designed to encourage vocal confidence and self-expression – key benefits which will impact significantly on the 11+ interview process and which can be the key to entry to a selective school. These workshops are about becoming a young person with something to say and a great voice to say it with!
The workshops take place over a full morning and will be followed up by personalised feedback and advice for your child.
The workshop will focus on remaining relaxed, confident and clear when you are being interviewed.
