A Pre-School with a difference…
For a joyful and adventurous start to your child’s education, look no further than the newly opened Little Broomwood.
Staff here believe that outdoor learning is essential, and their dedicated Early Years site is designed to give free flow access to indoor and outdoor classrooms. A typical day might involve going on a ‘bear hunt’ in the garden, concocting magic potions in the mud kitchen or climbing in the new adventure playground.
Little Broomwood is the first step in the Broomwood family of schools for children aged 3-13. It’s located between the green spaces of Clapham and Wandsworth Commons. Offering a bespoke and dynamic education, children start in the co-ed pre-prep before moving on to single sex, but collaborative prep schools at the age of seven.
Child Led and structured play:
Children in the pre-school year at Little Broomwood learn through play at every opportunity. They have an exciting and inventive curriculum and whether they are reading in the ‘secret’ library, doing maths puzzles in the classroom, or searching for dragons’ eggs in the garden, the emphasis is on having fun.
The pre-school year gives them an excellent grounding and they benefit from being part of the Broomwood school group. Specialist staff visit from other sites to deliver lessons in Music, French, Art and PE. Families are very much involved and are regularly invited to ‘Come and Learn’ sessions, events and talks.
A new approach to PE
Alongside the fun and rigorous academic foundation, Little Broomwood is pioneering a new PE programme for under 5’s. Using techniques more often applied by occupational and physical therapists, exercises are delivered by specialist sports teachers to help young children develop core strength, improve balance and co-ordination. Caron Mackay, Pre-Prep Head says it benefits children in ALL their lessons.
‘We’re developing their gross and fine motor skills, which are crucial for co-ordination, balance and muscle tone. This gives them physical confidence and helps our children across the board, from sitting at a table to holding a pencil. A typical activity might involve bouncing a balloon first in the right hand and then in the left, working both sides of the brain and crawling in a plank position from one side of the room to the other.’
The school believes the programme is transforming concentration levels and as Little Broomwood children move into higher years this will benefit them both in the classroom and when they’re introduced to more formal sports.
Preparing for the next step
Little Broomwood children move seamlessly into Reception. Most will then stay at Broomwood until either 11 or 13+. They are prepared for entrance to both day and boarding schools and win a huge number of scholarships every year from academic, to drama, music, art and sport awards. A happy childhood. Outstanding results.
