In 1991 Derek set up to make and install furniture for the domestic and commercial market working with architects, interior designers and contract furnishers and private clients. Of late he has concentrated on furniture for the home, particularly in the area of storage. This has been particularly important where people instead of moving house have instead extended the house outwards or upwards into the loft area.

Bookshelves, wardrobes and understairs storage have become staple items for his workshop. His approach to making furniture for clients is best summed up by the recommendations of two of his clients:

“Derek was recommended to me by an architect I took some advice from when designing my kitchen. I also got a reference from a doctor I knew who had used Derek to create her new kitchen. Derek helped me to design my kitchen , then he built all my kitchen cabinets, worktops, larder and shelving. He did a marvellous job with fantastic attention to detail and great skill. He was reliable and trustworthy. My husband was so pleased with his work that we got him to make us floor to ceiling bookshelves in our sitting room. Again they are completely bespoke and beautifully finished. I would recommend Derek wholeheartedly. I am in SW11 but I know he works all over London”.

“Derek designed, built and then painted a pair of alcove cabinets with shelving and cupboards to fit either side of a chimney in our living room. He came out a couple of times to take measurements, confirm the specification, and then worked through the options with us, accounting for all our idiosyncracies and fitting the design into the Victorian style of the room. The finished product is exceptionally good – Derek paid a lot of attention to fitting the cabinets into the room, filling and smoothing the join  with the never-quite-vertical or horizontal dimensions. We obtained quotes from a number of bespoke specialist alcove companies which came in significantly higher with a less personalised service”.

The aspect of understairs storage has become a speciality of his as people realise that it is not just an area for throwing odd items but can become a useful and accessible space. whether it be for shoes, hanging clothes, tools or vacuum cleaner.

He would be happy to offer a no obligations quotation.
