Mums all over the country rave about Buggyfit – it’s a great way of getting back in shape while having fun with your baby and meeting like-minded mums to boot.

There are classes on Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common, and it’s much cheaper than a personal trainer.

You bring your baby along to the sessions (no special buggies needed) and the trainers recommend that you feed your baby before coming to class, so they’re not hungry and you can get an hour to concentrate on exercise. That said there’s no problem if your baby does need food or comfort during the class and you won’t be the only one!

The class usually starts with a warm up and then moves onto some circuit training to really get the blood pumping. The trainers incorporate many different types of exercise to give a full body workout, including boxing, hula hooping and resistance bands. Toning exercises follow, specifically selected to strengthen and tone the muscle groups that enable us to cope with the demands of motherhood – and there’s an abdominal workout, stretching and cool-down session at the end.

Included in the sessions are tips and techniques for adopting better posture, no more hunching over those pram handles. Oh and do remember to wear your exercise clothes, trainers, bring some water and a towel or mat to lie on.

Katie Samuel runs the classes on Clapham Common, and has been a qualified aerobics teacher since 2003. She started Buggyfit classes after having her first child three years ago.

Sessions are run on Wandsworth Common by Eliza Nearn, a professionally trained dancer, ballet and jazz teacher who has been a Buggyfit trainer for four years.

All Buggyfit classes have been developed by experts to suit the various stages your body goes through after having a baby. The trainers gauge class fitness and will tailor the workout accordingly so do speak out if you’d like to work harder or concentrate on any specific areas. NB. It’s always advisable to consult your GP before getting back into exercise after having a baby.
