Looking for private gym facilities but on a sports centre budget? Then pull on your trainers and get down to Clapham High Street.

Clapham Leisure Centre opened in January 2012, and is located on Clapham Manor Street (just off the High Street). It’s a clean, airy modern space, with lots of facilities and activities on offer for parents and little ones alike.

The biggest attraction is its two pools – a large one for lane swimming and a nice warm baby pool for lessons and open sessions. Wet changing cubicles are a bit of a squeeze for more than one person and there’s limited disabled/baby changing space, but apart from that, it’s spotless and well-equipped.

For baby and toddler swimming lessons, check www.sportscourses.org for AquaTots availability (type in Lambeth and the Clapham Leisure Centre will come up).  Gymnastics, football and swimming

Another draw is Toddlers’ World – designed for the under-fives. It’s a soft play zone with inflatables, ladders, slides and other elements to develop balance, coordination and skill. Book sessions online at either 9.30-11am or 1.30-3pm.

It goes without saying that there is a fully stocked gym onsite with all the usual cardio machines and weights. There’s also a studio that’s home to over 40 classes a week. Chose from aerobiking, Pilates, power pump, cardio blast, water workout, Brazilian dance, yoga and box fit, among other things. Sports like badminton, football and basketball take place in the main sports hall. A junior climbing wall is coming soon.

The centre opens at 6.30am on weekdays and group classes start at 7.15am. Last classes finish at around 9pm and the centre shuts at 10pm.

One day passes are £10 and monthly membership is just £39.95. This includes access to the gym, unlimited group exercise classes, pool, and a personalised fitness programme. Unfortunately there is no crèche facility available at the moment.
